Training #3 ( Sarah Azmal )

My project this summer will be about analyzing invertebrate fossils in the geological record. What I will be doing is explore the collections, ecology, and food webs in the WIS. What I will also do is take pictures of many fossils and document it online, also gain experience with 3D imaging and photogrammetry, using state-of-the-art equipment at the West Campus Imaging Lab.. Future research will be going throughout the whole project.  I will also investigate reconstructing food webs in the Seaway and how to engage others to learn about this fascinating and different ecosystem. What I look forward on the first day is getting to know my professor and actually learning what invertebrate paleontology is and doing hands on activity with fossils. What i'm nervous about is still not knowing what my internship is about and not finishing the research poster and disappointing not only my professor but my partner as well.

Training 3 (Ethan Weed)

This summer, Amir and I will be contributing to research in many ways. Not only will we be assembling air pollutant monitors, but we will also have the opportunity to work in the field to help build systems that collect atmospheric measurements and data. Our work will help contribute to data collection and further developing atmospheric data collection methods. Next Tuesday, I will be starting my internship. I am excited, and look forward to my first day in the lab. I am excited to experience a lab environment and get a feel for what its like to work with a team of people in a lab environment. More importantly, however, I hope to contribute in some way toward a scientific cause. If I am able to effectively collect data and offer valuable resources to the teams research, I will know that have done my job.

Training #3 (Daniela)

My project will be about materials science and interface surfaces, the materials the CRISP center focuses on are crystalline metal oxides and bulk metallic glasses. While I am not exactly sure what the PI is currently studying or the focus of the project is, the CRISP research center focuses on the applications of of surfaces between different materials and the interfaces where two materials come into contact. Upon reading this I thought that this was just some random field of study, but materials science has become an increasingly relevant field of study as devices become smaller and more complex. Through materials science, discoveries can be made about the interactions between different materials and how to control and utilize the materials' behaviors.  I am looking forward to learning more about the project I will be working on and meeting the PIs at CRISP. Training #3 (Cyril King)

6/21/18: Greetings,         My name is Cyril King and I am a rising junior attending Engineering Science University Magnet School. The project I will be doing this summer is the CRISP (Center for Research on Interface Structures and Phenomena), involving the study of physics and the application of surface material and its behavior. This is relevant to the broader field of physics that my lab is in because it relates to natural science and study of matter in motion and its behavior. Furthermore, the lab allows the conduction of energy and force.      I am looking forward to participating and contributing to the research at Yale. However, I am still nervous about what I will be specifically doing especially knowing that a lot of the information I will be receiving and labs I will be doing is completely new to me since, my school doesn't offer this opportunity. Training 3 (Johanna)

My project this summer is going to be about learning multi-wavelength astronomy and how stars form. This is relevant to the broader field where my lab will take place in (astronomy) because we research how stars will form which can lead to formations of galaxies and different solar systems. I am looking forward to naming stars and learning how to identify new ones. I am nervous on using the equipment to see these stars.

Training #3

My project this summer will be all about star formation, specifically looking at multi-wavelength astronomy to help us discover information such as what effect wind and radiation emitted from young stars have on the dust and gas of the cloud in which they formed. Star formation is relevant to the broader field of astronomy in that it helps human beings understand how the universe and the structures (such as galaxies and solar systems) came to be. It can also help us to understand where the universe and stars are heading in terms of their formation. On the first day in the lab, I am looking forward to meeting with Dr. Arcé and learning more about his research. I am excited to learn about what specifically we will be doing in the lab and seeing the lab environment for the first time. I am not particularly nervous about anything except maybe not being able to understand some of the material, but usually, when I read more about it and piece it together, I can figure out what is going on.

PI research (Amir)

     Dr.Gentner has many areas of research and interest. Some include are air quality in developing countries and megacities, energy choices and air quality, and analytical chemistry for the atmosphere. Our internship will be focused on air quality and what we find in our atmosphere that we breathe in. Being involved in environmental science and chemistry now, I'm excited to see what we can find and bring any of the issues to light.      The research on the analytical chemistry sort of confused me. I don't know how to interpret the complex graphs and other figures yet and also some of the languages used. One term used often is SOA which is secondary organic aerosols, another is VOC which means volatile organic compound. As well the different variations of VOC's  IVOC- intermediate volatility organic compound and SVOC-Semi-volatile organic compound.
